Environmental Awareness Training for U.S. Navy

A Navy installation needed environmental awareness training content, and a cost effective way to deliver the training to its 18,000 employees. Like most installations, environmental management included a combination of regulatory compliance, natural, cultural and archaeological resource conservation, and strategic planning to ensure environmental compliance was aligned with mission requirements.

EHS Technologies reviewed the environmental awareness training requirements applicable to the installation along with available technologies that would allow for efficient training delivery. Classroom training for 18,000 employees was not an option. A plan to create a training video that could be delivered via traditional videocassette as well as electronically via small compact discs was presented to the client. The plan was approved; the next challenge was making the training site-specific. To control costs for the client, stock footage shot and maintained by the installation was reviewed and used wherever possible. For topics where no stock footage was available, a film crew was brought to the installation to capture footage, and to provide narration and video editing.

The final version of the environmental awareness training video was delivered to the client on both VHS tape, and small compact disc. A user interface was created using Macromedia Flash MX, with embedded links to play the video or a PowerPoint version of the training. Local environmental documents (management plans, permits, and instructions) were also included on the disc, increasing their availability to installation personnel.
